Mayoral candidate Gord Steeves plans to make his first public statement since a Facebook post by his wife drew accusations of racism.
Steeves invited media to hear his address on Tuesday, August 12. The time and place have yet to be determined.
Lorrie Steeves wrote on her Facebook page in 2010 complaining about aboriginal panhandlers downtown, referring to “drunken native guys” on welfare who harass her. Gord Steeves was a city councillor at the time.
Inner-city activists and members of the aboriginal community condemned the comments after they re-surfaced on an anonymous Twitter account on Friday. Lorrie Steeves issued a written apology later that day.
