Federal correctional officials told CTV News Stony Mountain Institution is in lockdown due to an unauthorized item or items.
Correctional Service Canada said the lockdown went into place at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning and intimates have been confined to their cells.
Officials said the reason is to facilitate an ‘exceptional search’ of the prison.
The agency received information that there was an unauthorized item or items in the institution.
“Consequently the officers will be searching the buildings and grounds to ensure the safety and security of the instruction,” said Jeff Campbell, regional communications manager for Correctional Service Canada in a phone call from Saskatoon.
“In order to make that possible visits are cancelled for the duration of the search.”
Campbell said normal operations will resume as soon as possible and the agency will send out an advisory.
