The Manitoba Trucking Association is pleased with the province's announcement they will upgrade Highway 75 to prevent extended closures due to flooding.
MTA general manager Terry Shaw said the organization has been lobbying hard for improvements to the road.
He said the Emerson border crossing is the busiest in western Canada and when Highway 75 is flooded the economic impact on Manitoba truckers is estimated at $1.5 million per week.
Details of exactly what the infrastructure upgrades will look like have not been released yet but could include diverting part of the Morris River.
Morris Mayor Gavin van der Linde said studies are still being done to determine the best options.
He said the town's economy is very dependent on the trucking industry.
Morris Husky is a popular truck stop on Highway 75 and the store's general manager said about 75 per cent of the business comes from the transportation industry.
Truckers at the business Monday said detours caused by flooding cost time and money and they welcomed the announcement the highway is being upgraded.
