Calgary police have identified the victim in a homicide case under investigation as a convicted Winnipeg killer.
Around 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Calgary police officers were called to a home in the southwest Calgary community of Evergreen where they found a deceased man outside the residence.
Residents in the area said they were woken up by a number of gunshots and startled by the large police presence.
Officials said the victim is 31-year-old Joel Gary Geddes, a Winnipeg man with an extensive criminal history.
Geddes was charged with second-degree murder in the fatal baseball-bat beating of 18-year-old Morgan Trudeau in Winnipeg in 2003.
He was convicted of manslaughter after a plea bargain.
In 2006, Geddes was charged with kidnapping and aggravated assault, but the victim didn't show up in court and the charges were stayed.
Winnipeg's organized crime unit arrested him again in 2010 for a home invasion and beating of a man.
CTV news has learned Geddes was a former member of the Zig Zag Crew, a Manitoba gang with ties to the Hells Angels. He lived in Evergreen for two years.
An autopsy is ongoing and an official cause of death will be released once that is complete.
Police add there is no evidence to indicate that it was a random attack. They are still working out a possible motive in the killing.
Police have not released if they have any suspects at this time either, but they are working to determine suspect descriptions and confirm if there were any vehicles involved.
They are also speaking with a number of witnesses about the incident.
