A 17-year-old boy from Winnipeg has been charged with manslaughter in the beating death of an 18-year-old man at a house party in Transcona.

Friends of the victim have told CTV News his name was Christian Oneail and that he was days away from starting classes at the University of Manitoba.

Winnipeg police said they were called to the 100-block of Nevens Bay around 1:00 a.m. Saturday for a report of a disturbance.

When they arrived they learned that Oneail had been taken to hospital because of upper body injuries sustained after a verbal altercation turned physical.

Oneail died later in hospital.

Police said the 17-year-old suspect is in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
