Three people escaped a house on Minnigaffe Street after fridge started leaking ammonia.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a foul smell around 12 p.m. The smell was traced to an old, 70s-style fridge in the basement.

Hazmat crews entered the house and moved the fridge outdoors, then the interior of the house was ventilated.

Ammonia is a toxic gas that can be fatal if inhaled, as well as cause burns to skin and eyes. High concentrations can become a fire and explosion hazard, according to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.

Paramedics assessed the occupants but no treatment was needed.
