Two city councillors want more scrutiny over water and sewer rate hikes coming down the pipe.

City council approved a three-year plan in May to increase rates. The approved hikes are $92 in 2016 and similar increases for the following two years. Administrators said the revenue is required for provincially mandated upgrades to the system.

But councillors Jason Schreyer and Shawn Dobson want the city to hold public hearings to review the increases.

At issue, the city takes an annual dividend from the water and waste utility. 2016 saw a record amount, with $32 million dollars earmarked for general coffers.
