The initial steps to build Freedom Road at Shoal Lake 40 are underway.

A request for proposals has been released by the City of Winnipeg to design a bridge that will cross the aqueduct.

The First Nation on the Manitoba-Ontario border was cut off from the mainland a century ago when Winnipeg's aqueduct was built.

In December, all three levels of government committed to share the costs of Freedom Road, connecting the community to the Trans-Canada Highway.

The city said it will award the contract by Aug. 3.
