Canadians are rallying for a 16-year-old girl beaten and left for dead in the freezing Assiniboine River in Winnipeg on the weekend.

As Rinelle Harper recovers in hospital surrounded by family, support pours in from across the country.

The hashtag "Pray for Rinelle" began trending in Winnipeg hours after police identified her as the victim of an attack so brutal, the homicide team is investigating.

That horror has fueled discussion, says the creator of "Missing Manitoba Women" blog and Facebook page, Shelley Cook.

She says especially since Winnipeg police got permission from Rinelle's parents to release her name.

“I hope that humanizing this and these stories bring these people forward and the people who commit these kind of crimes are caught,” said Cook.

CTV News has learned Winnipeg police obtained surveillance video which shows Rinelle walking with two people near Assiniboine Avenue on Nov. 7.

The next morning, a passerby found her badly beaten on the river walk.

She was sent to hospital in critical condition. Rinelle is now awake and has started walking again. Her family says she's improving each day.
