Emergency crews were on scene Monday afternoon monitoring a small group of deer roaming downtown Winnipeg streets.

Manitoba Conservation said six deer were initially spotted at Colony Street near Broadway, and two broke off from the group. The remaining four were roaming the Broadway area.

Police and conservation officers were on scene controlling traffic and creating a path for the animals.

“What we did is we just kept people away, and kept the deer calm, and we wanted to get a route to get them down to the river where I assume they may have come from,” said Joe Johannesson, a district supervisor with Manitoba Conservation.

Police blocked off Broadway, and the deer made it safely to the river.

“It’s happened probably every year for the last four years, we have one or two deer downtown or in someone’s backyard,” said Johannesson.

“We just leave them until they can make their way.”
