A city councillor wants to make sure Winnipeggers know when a case against Mayor Sam Katz is heading to court.
Coun. Harvey Smith (Daniel McIntyre) has put a campaign style sign on the fence outside his house advertising the conflict of interest suit against Katz set for Tuesday, April 2.
Restaurant owner Joe Chan claims Katz violated the law when he used taxpayer dollars to host a staff Christmas party at a restaurant the mayor once owned.
Chan has a similar sign up on his establishment.
"It (makes) a big impact. It brings the information to the public," said Chan.
Smith said he wanted to put the signs up on recyclable containers outside city hall but the public works department denied the request saying the signs weren't in good character.
"I'm not involved. This is purely Joe Chan versus the mayor. Sure, Joe is a friend and I think that he's right,” said Smith.
The councillor said he spent $300 out of his own pocket on the signs.
The mayor's office declined a request to comment on the signs on March 26. In the past, Mayor Katz has always insisted he did nothing wrong.
If a judge decided Katz violated the conflict of interest law, he could lose his seat.
