An early Sunday morning fire caused significant damage to a home in St James before firefighters were able to bring it under control.

According to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, the fire began in a second floor bedroom of a house on Linwood Street just before 2:30 a.m.

One person was home at the time of the fire and was able to get out of the house before fire crews arrived but two cats did not make it out and died in the home.

WFPS says the home suffered extensive smoke and heat damage.

The cause remains under investigation and no damage estimate was immediately available.
