Winnipeg's deputy police chief says he has 'extreme' confidence in the department's K-9 unit.

The comments follow allegations of wrong-doing involving a bomb dog used at the airport.

Sources told CTV News that the dog was not validated.

Police have launched an internal investigation into the K-9 unit.

“We are conducting a regulatory review right now that will be looking at record keeping. Does it meet protocol, policy, best practice etc.,” said Dave Thorne, the deputy chief with the Winnipeg police.

“I am extremely confident and I think we’re very proud of our K-9 unit. Not only the handlers, but also the dogs that we’ve trained and the performance that they do. I would match our K-9 unit up against any K-9 unit in North America,” he said.

RCMP currently provide security at the airport.

The Winnipeg Airport Authority stresses the change is simply a business decision.
