A man faces numerous driving charges after he allegedly hit several people after getting kicked out of a Winnipeg bar early Sunday morning.
The man had been socializing with friends at Teasers Burlesque Palace when staff kicked him out because of his disruptive behavior shortly after midnight, said police.
"We're certainly digging deeper with respect to why this individual may have been kicked out of the establishment and we're certainly going to be confirming details with regards to the consuming of alcohol," said Const. Jason Michalyshen.
He then got into a car and hit a cab that was parked in front of him several times before driving off.
The driver returned, again hitting the cab, which in turn hit the cab driver standing nearby. The driver took off, but returned shortly, now driving on the sidewalk. He hit one person walking along the sidewalk, then hit two others standing in front of the bar.
Tire tracks clearly show where the vehicle drove up on to the sidewalk before striking three pedestrians. Winnipeg police say it's extremely fortunate none of them was seriously injured.
“Thankfully there was a barrier, my understanding some fairly heavy concrete flower pots, that might have created a bit of a barrier between the car and these two other pedestrians,” said Michalyshen.
The driver then got out of the car and tried to run away, but several bystanders chased him down and held him there until police arrived.
“This is a very concerning incident,” said Michalyshen. “Not only do we have an individual potentially impaired by alcohol, but we have an individual who is driving in an incredibly erratic manner, putting not only himself but a number of people at risk.”
All the pedestrians hit are in stable condition. The 23-year-old driver is in custody and the investigation is ongoing.
Messages left by CTV for the owner of Teasers Burlesque Palace have not been returned.
