After a Maclean’s article labelled Winnipeg as Canada’s most racist city, a gathering Friday focused on putting a stop to racism.
Meet Me at the Bell Tower is a weekly gathering on Selkirk Avenue usually focused on ending violence in the North End.
Community activist Michael Champagne leads the discussion and said the group also talks about issues related to racism.
"The racism that is present not only in Winnipeg but Canada-wide is something that we need to have a serious conversation about and figure out what actions we're going to take about this,” he said.
The Maclean’s article has prompted more people to come forward to share personal stories about racism.
Brandy Hill has experienced racism first hand, with other kids calling her names.
“I didn't cry about it in front of them but I stood my ground I went home. Then I cried, shook it off and said, ‘You know what? I am who I am. I can't change that and I won't,’” said Hill.
She’s happy Maclean’s magazine covered the issue.
Former Winnipegger Nancy Macdonald wrote the article.
“I think it's great that we're having this conversation and we're talking about these things because there are people in this society, in this city, who feel they're not being treated fairly and there are reasons they're falling behind,” she said.
