The City of Winnipeg says four lanes at the Plessis underpass will open to traffic at about 11 a.m. today.

It has taken four years and millions of dollars to complete the project.

The underpass project was first announced in 2012 at a cost of $77 million dollars. But it was plagued by years of delays and millions in cost overruns.

Passing trains and traffic congestion made the area a frustration for drivers.

The City hopes the new underpass - which separates trains from vehicles - will make the area safer for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, and a more efficient route for vehicles now that train traffic is not an issue.

A short ceremony to mark the opening of the underpass is planned at 11 a.m.

Dan Vandal, Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface-Saint Vital, Blair Yakimoski, MLA for Transcona , James Teitsma, MLA for Radisson, and Transcona City Councillor Russ Wyatt will attend.
