Manitobans are being encouraged to give the planet a bit of a break today.
The annual Earth Hour event will happen between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. this evening, when people all around the world will turn off their electrical devices for one hour.
Municipal and provincial government officials are participating. Staff turned off all lights and computer monitors before leaving the office on Friday.
The MTS Centre is also getting in on it. They will be shutting off most of the building’s lights, boilers, and air handling units. Ice plant compressors and pumps will be cycled off for that period. All 30 National Hockey League arenas are participating.
The World Wildlife Fund started Earth Hour in 2007.
