Winnipeg's own soccer star, Desiree Scott, brought more than just her cleats to her third annual soccer camp in support of KidSport Winnipeg.

She brought her Olympic bronze medal for the girls to hold and touch.

“That’s part of the experience, is getting to actually see it and they’re like, ‘This is super heavy,’” said Scott.

“It’s just nice to bring it out, allow them to touch it. And I think that experience is something they’ll never forget, so that’s why I’m here to share it with them,” Scott said.

A full group of 60 girls showed up Saturday with lots of energy for Scott, she said with a laugh.

“I’m a proud Winnipegger and I think that part of the job of being a good role model is giving back,” said Scott. “It’s been a great morning, just been super fun, just hanging with the kids and showing them a little bit.”

The camp was held the Axworthy Health and RecPlex at the University of Winnipeg for girls from eight to 18 years of age.

The girls got a chance to build up their technical skills by taking part in agility training, fundamental drills and ball-familiarity exercises.

“It’s about fun, but it’s also about that hard work and I try to instill that that hard work does pay off through repetition and training and practice. The most important thing is that they have fun,” said Scott.

Aside from the technical aspect of the game, the day was meant to teach the girls other important life-long skills like teamwork, leadership, dedication, and self-confidence.

Proceeds from the camp go to KidSport Winnipeg, a national charity which provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport.
