A Winnipeg man is facing a slew of charges after officials said he tried to reverse a vehicle into a Winnipeg Police Service officer.

Police were called to an assault Sunday at around 1:30 a.m. at an apartment building in the 100 block of Andrews Street.

When officers arrived, a man was locked in a vehicle behind the apartment building.

Police said they tried to arrest the man but he wouldn’t cooperate. Officers then attempted to remove the man from the vehicle.

Officials said the man then started the vehicle and reversed towards a police officer.

The officer had to jump out of the vehicle’s path to avoid being hit.

The man then fled the area and later collided with several parked vehicles in a fenced compound near the intersection of Main Street and Partridge Avenue.

The man was transported to hospital in stable condition and released.

Kevin Garth Helm, 43, has been arrested and charged with multiple assault and impaired driving offences.

He was taken into police custody.
