Manitoba raises cap on VLTs in province; Opposition says government 'addicted'

WINNIPEG -- Manitoba's Opposition says a decision to add more VLTs in the province shows the government is "addicted" to the revenue the machines bring in.

The Progressive Conservatives say the NDP government had promised to curb expansion of video lottery terminals.

Tory lottery critic Cliff Cullen says the New Democrats have instead increased the number of machines by about 1,340 in the last 12 years to 5,788.

Cullen says in a statement that some of the most vulnerable Manitobans will be hit the hardest.

The government is raising the cap on the number of VLTs allowed by about 500.

Most of the locations are at hotels where owners will be able to apply for more machines.
