Police and emergency crews were called to a multi-car crash on Lagimodiere Boulevard on the Concordia Overpass just before 7 a.m. Friday
The 20-vehicle pileup sent three people to hospital in stable condition with minor injuries.
Snow and rain made for treacherous conditions.
“It's kind of our first taste of slippery roads, with regards to the weather, the weather is changing, cooler temperatures, and snow and different types of weather are on the way so, as motorists, we certainly do need to adjust our driving,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen from Winnipeg police.
Manitoba Public Insurance also said drivers need to be cautious behind the wheel with the change in weather conditions.
“We know around one degree (Celsius), that's when you'll start to see water freezing up a little bit, and the bridges and overpasses will freeze before anything else. That's because they don't have the benefit of the warmth from the ground,” said Brian Smiley, MPI spokesperson.
Drivers should avoid passing or accelerating on bridges and overpasses, with black ice a particular concern, said MPI.
Drivers should also slow down and leave space in front of their vehicles.
MPI also said to make sure the tread on your tires is in good shape, along with having window-washer fluid and clean wipers to help keep windshields clear so you can see what's around you while driving.
