The final party of the season starts Wednesday night and police will be out in full force looking for impaired drivers.

The Winnipeg Police Service said impaired drivers will be arrested and charged, consequences that can follow a driver.

“It will cost you more and more for your driver’s license and insuring your vehicle in the future,” said Const. Stéphane Fontaine.

Manitoba Public Insurance said that giving your keys to another impaired driver could also cost you. MPI said that move could breach your insurance.

Having a plan can prevent problems after for party guests and hosts.

Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries offers tips online for hosting a safe party, including reminders of proper alcohol servings.

MLCC said both guests and hosts are responsible for keeping events safe.

"We have Operation Red Nose running, there's designated driver services, there's cabs, there's pound taxi, there's public transportation, so having a plan in place to help those folks who may have had too much to drink or maybe being prepared to let them stay over," says Susan Harrison with MLCC.

Winnipeg Transit will be free to riders on New Year’s Eve. According to their website, the last bus leaves at around 1:38 a.m.
