Back in January, Luxton School started running a project called “Heart and Sole” on the theory that exercise leads to improved results in the classroom.

Every day a group of students workout in the school’s fitness room with treadmills, bikes and rowing machines.

The students record how they are feeling before and after workout sessions.

Teachers have said the they’ve seen an increase in student attendance, self-esteem and attentiveness in class since the program began.

The program caters to students in grades 4 to 6 and is also run in other grades as well.

Although not considered a pilot project, St. John’s MLA Gord Macintosh has said it has the potential to expand beyond Luxton School.
