It's no secret that front-loading washing machines often perform better than top loaders. They're also gentler on your clothes and energy efficient. But some customers who bought the new machines had to deal with an unusual problem.

"The issue started out as mostly online chatter about moldy odors, but it turned into multiple class-action lawsuits involving more than 6 million front-loading washing machines,” explained Dan DiClerico with Consumer Reports.

Now, many of those class action suits are being settled. Some U.S. customers who owned certain LG washers could get $35 or a rebate on a new washer.

Another lawsuit involving Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore machines made by Whirlpool could earn consumers $50 or 20 per cent off the purchase of a new washer or dryer.

"Manufacturers claim they've resolved the problem by improving the door gasket and adding a tub clean cycle,” DiClerico explained.

Canadian owners are not included in the class action settlements, but there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent mold and mildew.

Front-loading washer owners are advised to wipe down the glass and door gasket daily, leave the door open slightly between washes, and remove detergent buildup from the dispenser.

Every month, consumers should sanitize the machine by adding a cup of chlorine bleach and running a hot water wash without laundry.
