Some elective surgeries were cancelled at Health Sciences Centre on Monday morning.

That's because of a power outage at the hospital. Back-up power is in place, but ambulances have been diverted for all but the most critical emergencies. Around 1:30 p.m. Monday, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said it's expected to take several hours before full power is restored.

A spokesperson with the WRHA said a breaker failed just after 11 a.m. Monday.

The WRHA said patients affected by the scheduling changes would be contacted. People can also call the numbers listed on their appointment booking forms for information.

Cancer and life-saving surgeries are still going ahead, said officials.
