The city hopes a new traffic signal will help emergency crews respond to calls faster. The new signal dedicated to emergency vehicles will be installed on Portage Avenue at Route 90, near the newly constructed Fire Station No. 11.

The new signal will turn on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

A sign mounted below the traffic signal indicates the direction from which the emergency vehicle needs to enter the roadway. Only emergency equipment operators leaving the station can control the signal.

The light will first flash amber, signaling to drivers that an emergency vehicle is about to enter the roadway. The light then changes to steady amber, and finally to red, indicating that all other vehicles should stop to allow the emergency vehicle to enter.
