The city is tackling the problem of absentee landlords renting out homes around the University of Manitoba.
St. Norbert Councillor Janice Lukes says in many cases students are illegally crammed into rental properties and the yards are not maintained.
Homeowners in the area have complained the properties are blights to the neighbourhood and create safety issues for the students who live in the rooming houses.
Lukes says the problem is getting worse as the student population grows and she says there is not enough student housing on campus.
A city committee has agreed to form a working group including residents, the university and student associations to find a solution.
