Marshalls is the latest U.S. store to open a location in Manitoba.
The new store in Winnipeg is located in the Polo Park area, in a new shopping complex called Polo North.
Shoppers poured in to comb over the merchandise as soon as the doors opened on Thursday.
Shopper Maureen Hancharyk said she always goes to Marshalls in the U.S. and is excited to have the store open up here but will still visit when she travels.
The Retail Council of Canada said they don’t know if fewer Canadians are crossing the border to shop since other big name brands like Victoria’s Secret opened in November.
University of North Dakota Economics Professor David Flynn tells CTV News, retailers in Grand Forks or Fargo aren’t seeing a reduction of business from Canadians just yet. He said the real impact will likely be seen when Target opens later this spring.
The Canada Border Services Agency tracks how many people cross the border. Traffic is typically higher over a long weekend.
The Easter long weekend saw 19,500 people return home from the U.S. from March 29 – April 01.
The Easter weekend in 2012 saw nearly half that traffic. Just under 11,000 people returned home from April 6 – April 9, 2012.
Canada Border Services says this year, Easter coincided with the end of Spring Break which may have influenced the numbers.
