Ultimate Fighting Championship announced March 5 that it’s bringing an event to Winnipeg at the MTS Centre on June 15.

In the past in Canada, the UFC has brought events to Toronto, Calgary, Montreal and Vancouver.

Promoters say the events create millions of dollars in economic impact for host cities.

Giuseppe DeNatale is the president of the Canadian Fighting Championship which has been hosting events in Winnipeg since 2009.

He says he expects the announcement to be well received by local fight fans.

"Winnipeg's a great fight city," he said. "As soon as they put tickets on sale, it will be sold out within 10 minutes."

The UFC is currently one of the biggest brands in sports.

The June 15 event is billed as UFC 161 and will be shown around the world on pay-per-view.

Tickets are slated to go on sale on April 12. The economic impact of the event is believed to be about $10 million. The full card for the event has not yet been announced.
