Arson-related incidents have been on the rise in Winnipeg during the last three days, and police are warning that warmer temperatures could drive those numbers even higher.

Monday night, firefighters were called to a total of 12 arson-related fires. That compares to a total of 10 at this point last year.

Alex Forrest is the president of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg, and said this year’s numbers are alarming.

“Right now we are in an arson crisis, because what we have seen in the last week, we have seen at least two dozen fires that are likely arsons,” said Forrest.

With temperatures warming up in the coming days, Forrest said the city is entering a “perfect arson storm.”

“Everything is tinder dry in Winnipeg right now, so our margin of error, for getting to the scene, to be able to mitigate that circumstance, is getting smaller.”

Entering the midway point of arson awareness week, police are reminding the public of ways to help reduce the risk of fire-setting behavior.

Police advise residents to avoid placing garbage bins, or other compostable items against the exterior of homes, garages or fences.

They also remind the public to keep all flammable liquids in secure storage, and ensure that all house and garage doors are locked.
