A Winnipeg green space has a new name.

The “Minnetonka Woodlot” was unveiled as the newly named “Minnetonka Forest” during a ceremony Saturday morning.

City councilor Brian Mayes along with MLA Christine Melnick and Winnipegger Mike Balshaw helped unveil a new sign for the forest.

In September 2013, at the suggestion of Balshaw, Mayes passed a motion to rename the area. The motion was confirmed in October 2013 by the city’s Protection and Community Services Committee.

The reason for the renaming was to ensure future protection, said Mayes in a statement released Saturday.

"The name Woodlot suggested future harvesting of these trees,” said Mayes. “It's a much appreciated resource for residents in the area, and it was time to make a statement about protecting this green space."

The forest of oak and aspen covers 1.66 hectares in St. Vital’s Minnetonka neighborhood.

The new sign is on the River Road facing portion of the forest.
