A new acting deputy chief of police has been appointed to the Winnipeg Police Service.

In a press release, Police Chief Devon Clunis announced Wednesday morning Supt. Dave Thorne will assume the role starting Oct. 6, 2013.

Thorne has been a member of the Winnipeg Police Service for 32 years.

The acting deputy has worked in the operations branch in uniform patrol and in criminal investigations, and has also been trained as a hostage negotiator, said officials.

“Whatever his role in our service, Acting Deputy Chief Thorne has always been committed to the continuous improvement of the organization and the delivery of effective policing services,” says Chief Clunis in the announcement.

Acting Deputy Thorne assumes his new role in advance of the retirement of Deputy Chief Shelley Hart in February.

Chief Clunis says the period of overlap will help ensure continuity of leadership as Deputy Hart prepares to move on to the next chapter of her life.
