Manitoba MP Candice Bergen will serve as House Leader of the Conservative caucus in the next session of Parliament.

Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose made the announcement Thursday.

“I look forward to working with (Bergen) as Conservatives are the only party in the House of Commons to act as the taxpayers’ watchdog, holding this Liberal government to account,” Ambrose said in a news release.

The Portage-Lisgar MP replaces Andrew Scheer, who stepped down earlier this week.

Bergen became known as the MP responsible for shepherding the bill that ultimately killed the long-gun registry.

Bergen has served previously as Minister of State for Social Development, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety, Official Opposition Critic for Natural Rsources, Chair of the House Human Resources Committee, Vice-Chair of the House of Status of Women Committee, and Chair of the Supreme Court Selection Panel.
