The City of Winnipeg is looking at changing its policy on replacing damaged recycling or garbage carts.
Currently, residents have to pay to replace a damaged or missing bin, unless it was broken by Emterra’s collection crews.
The cost to replace one of the carts is up to $75.
City council will soon vote on a proposal to cover the costs of vandalized or broken bins, as long as the homeowners were not at fault.
“There’s exposure of these carts and they’re out there in the back lanes,” said Coun. Ross Eadie (Mynarski.)
Eadie helped champion the idea of covering costs for carts.
The city anticipates it will see 1,500 claims per year, at a cost of $127,000.
The program would not be retroactive.
A city committee will examine the report on overhauling the policy on Jan. 16.
If the new rules are approved by city council, they could take effect by Jan. 28.
