A North End church in Winnipeg will be converted into a mosque without losing its heritage designation.

The current owners of the 107-year-old St. Giles Presbyterian Church on Burrows Avenue wanted the building removed from the city’s historical list in order to sell it.

City planners have assured a Muslim group hoping to buy the building, it can make changes inside the church even with the designation.

The historical status prevents building owners from changing certain aspects of a structure.

According to documents submitted to the city earlier this year, initial plans for site may have been to demolish the church to make way for a housing complex.
