Commuters driving near Pipeline Road and the Perimeter Highway are calling for change after a string of serious accidents.

Today marked the third collision at the intersection in the last four weeks – one crash killed two people.

"This intersection is horrible,” said David Kroll, who drives through the intersection daily. "I come home from work, I see people, I see red lights flashing here and I hope to God it's not one of my family members or neighbours.”

Drivers say the intersection is getting more dangerous, because vehicles aren’t slowing down to the speed limit, which is 80 km/h.

"They're not slowing down. In fact they're speeding. You can tell some vehicles are speeding to make the light," added another driver, Dianne Kroll.

Manitoba RCMP say there have been 16 serious injury collisions on the Perimeter Highway in 2016, and two fatal collisions. Those numbers double the amount in 2015, so now police are now out enforcing the area.

"Yesterday in particular we handed out 24 tickets in a three hour span – that worked out to essentially eight tickets per hour," said RCMP Inspector Ed Moreland.

He adds that in a perfect world there would be an overpasses on all major intersections around the Perimeter.

In 2015, the NDP promised to replace lights with overpasses on the south Perimeter.

The Pallister government said they will be spending no less than $1 billion annually on strategic infrastructure. They explained they will assess projects based on return on investment.
