Thomas Steen is running again in the Elmwood-East Kildonan ward, but the former Winnipeg Jet faces several challengers.
Steen said that, under his watch, crime is down and new roads, housing and parks have sprung up.
He’s hoping for a repeat victory.
"When I go door to door it sounds very good and until Oct. 22. I have no idea what's going to happen,” he said.
Steen won the 2010 election by 200 votes, with two NDP-linked candidates splitting the vote.
This time, there is only one candidate with NDP ties, Jason Schreyer, the son of former Manitoba premier Ed Schreyer.
"I decided to run a year and a half ago and take on Mr. Steen in the political arena of policy and debate and that's what I continue to do during this election,” said Jason Schreyer.
Steen is a man of few words around the council table and his two other opponents say the same is true of how he responds to people in his ward.
“I think there (are) a lot of people in the community are upset with the level of communication they've had. They feel it could be a lot better,” said Paul Quaye, a candidate in Elmwood-East Kildonan.
"Often times, they wouldn't get a reply (that) they would actually need to talk to Jeff Browaty from North Kildonan to get somebody to talk back to them,” said Jason Cumming, a candidate in Elmwood-East Kildonan.
Steen is also facing assault charges.
"I can't really comment on it but I wish it would be over with so I didn't have to have that when I go door-to- door,” he said.
Steen's next scheduled court date is later this month. It's unclear if the matter will be resolved before the Oct. 22 election.
