A new retail development is joining IKEA and Cabela’s on Kenaston Boulevard.
In 2017, the empty lot at the northwest corner of Kenaston and Sterling Lyon Parkway will open as a 385,000 sq. ft. outlet-only mall. Winnipeggers say they’re happy to have more choices.
“I think the new shopping is outlet mall shopping to be honest. I think a lot of people are getting away from malls and more going in, getting out, doing it quick. So I think it’ll be good for this area for sure,” says shopper Jazzmin Dueck.
Mayor Sam Katz says the mall proves that developers are confident in Winnipeg.
“It’s a great sign for what people are thinking about our city and how our city’s momentum is continuing,” says Katz.
The company behind the outlet centre of Winnipeg, Ivanhoé Cambridge, is opening similar malls across Canada. They will open one in Niagara on Lake Ontario this year and one in Edmonton in 2016.
Ivanhoé Cambridge says in Winnipeg there will be 90 retailers under one roof making the centre “an unparalled retail mix" in neighbouring provinces and states. No specific stores have been announced.
Developers estimate the mall will attract around 33,000 additional vehicles per day to the area.
