Many gathered at a candle light vigil with family and friends in downtown Winnipeg for 26-year-old Cyril Quentin Weenusk from Oxford House First Nation.
Police identified him as the victim of Tuesday’s early morning homicide, at Portage Avenue and Donald Street.
"At this early stage in the investigation it appears that the victim had an altercation with a group of people," Said Constable Rob Carver of the Winnipeg Police Service.
Weenusk was transported to hospital with critical injuries, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say Weenusk didn't know his attackers, but they also don’t believe the deadly incident was random.
"It isn't the sort of incident that would necessarily alter the average person's perception of safety in the city or the downtown area," added Carver.
The Weenusk family said Cyril was in Winnipeg to escort his father to and from cancer treatments.
They describe him as a loving son, brother and father.
"He was a good guy all around, there aren't enough words to say about him except that he was a good man, a good father to his kids," said Ralf Weenusk, Cyril’s brother.
Weenusk left behind four young sons.
Investigators don't believe anyone witnessed the attack, but said there are surveillance cameras in the area, that will be used in the investigation.
Police said no weapons were used in the fight, and that they are looking for three or more suspects.
Police did not specify if Weenusk was alone at the time.
