Strategies for safer taxi service in Winnipeg were discussed at a meeting Monday night.

"Making complaints to the taxi board is one step, but they don't always do anything," said concerned citizen Bentley Dubois.

About a dozen people met to share concerns about women's safety in cabs. Organizers say it's an ongoing issue within the indigenous community.

CTV was told women are harassed and propositioned with drugs and alcohol, regardless of their age.

"I know of girls that are 12, 13 that this has happened to, as well as the elders in our community,” said Dubois. “They're subject to these cab rides. Sometimes the rides go longer than they should. Sometimes they get home and they're missing a couple bags of groceries."

The group says the Taxicab Board doesn't always respond to its concerns. It plans to take suggestions from the meeting to the province.
