A big effort this weekend to clean up a wildlife area plagued by illegal dumping.

Dozens of volunteers hauled 12, 000 kilograms of garbage out of the Mars Hill Wildlife Management Area Saturday.

In June, CTV Winnipeg showed you the dumping at mars hill wildlife management area last month.

Piles of gun shells, mattresses and plenty of other garbage were polluting the natural habitat.

At the time area residents said it had reached a point where people who use the recreational trails for hiking, birding and berry-picking said they were fed up.

Manitoba conservation and water stewardship says the clean-up effort was thanks to the recent news coverage, and the province's efforts to limit access where garbage was being dumped.
