An inquest into the death of an inmate at Stony Mountain Institution will hold a standing hearing in May to determine who can participate.
The inquiry was called after Dwayne Flett, 32 of St. Theresa Point First Nation, was found hanging by a bed sheet during a routine cell check on April 15, 2015.
An autopsy determined that Flett died by hanging and his death was ruled a suicide.
Now, the inquest will try to determine the circumstances surrounding Flett’s death and the events that led up to it. It will also try to determine what could be done to prevent similar deaths.
A judge must decide who can participate in the process and question witnesses.
Individuals and groups can apply for standing in the inquest by contacting Stephanie Harland, inquest counsel, at 204-945-5552 or stephanie.harland@gov.mb.ca by May 6.
The hearing is scheduled for May 19 at 9 a.m. in Courtroom 406 at the Manitoba Law Courts Complex, 408 York Ave., Winnipeg.
