MACKLIN, Sask. -- Mounties in Saskatchewan are asking for an independent investigation after a man drowned while trying to get away from police.

RCMP say they got a complaint -- they wouldn't say what it was about -- referring to a man near Macklin on Monday afternoon and when they arrived, the man tried to get away by swimming across a slough.

The man disappeared beneath the water and an officer went in to the water, but couldn't get to him.

His body was later recovered from the water by Macklin and Lloydminster Fire and Rescue.

The RCMP says it wants an independent investigation and has also requested the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer.

The Moose Jaw Police Service will conduct the independent, external investigation.
