A 48-year-old man is charged with impaired driving following an unusual collision in Headingley around 6:00 a.m. Saturday.

RCMP were called after witnesses reported a minivan dragging a traffic light down Highway 1.

Police said the man drove a kilometre with the light stuck on his vehicle.

The van broke down on the shoulder of the highway after its transmission blew under the weight.

RCMP said no one was hurt but are reminding people to find a safe ride home if they are planning on drinking.

They said they’ve charged 72 people with impaired driving and issued 34 license suspensions for drug and alcohol so far.

In Winnipeg, police released the results of week two of their festive checkstop program.

They said that between December 11 and 17, they stopped 431 vehicles and handed out eight 72-hour license suspensions. A total of 17 people were charged with impaired driving and 42 traffic tickets were also given out.
