Police have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a series of false 911 calls made throughout the summer.

Officers said the calls were made between July 12 and August 4 reporting fires or assaults. Emergency crews determined each call to be unfounded.

The most recent call was made on Saturday at around 3:00 a.m., said police. The suspect called 911 from a payphone to report a fire on Balmoral Street.

Police said the call turned out to be false and the man was located near the scene and was taken into custody.

He is facing seven counts of public mischief and seven counts of harassing telephone calls. He has been released on a promise to appear.

The Winnipeg Police Service is reminding the public to only call 911 in case of an emergency.
