A man from Long Plain First Nation is fighting for his life after he was hit by a semi over the weekend.
It happened on Hwy one near Portage la Prairie just before 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
Police say the 26-year-old was hitch-hiking east, and in the middle of the road, when a semi stopped.
The man jumped onto the truck to talk to the driver, who told him he was going to pull over onto the shoulder.
Police say the hitch-hiker jumped down and backed into the path of an approaching semi.
The man suffered serious lower body and head injuries.
He is now in the surgical intensive care unit at the Health Sciences Centre.
