At least three counties in Alberta have declared local states of agricultural disaster.

A drought, which is the worst in 50 years, is decimating cereal and hay crops.

Now one Manitoba farmer is hoping to help.

“We are trying to connect with local people there in Alberta, and make sure the hay goes to where it’s needed the most,” said Jurgen Kohler.

He has 100 round bales he’d like to donate to Alberta ranchers. And he’s asking other Manitoba farmers to do the same.

The challenge for Jurgen is moving these bales west.

Each one weighs more than one thousand pounds.

A Winnipeg company has volunteered to transport some of the hay.

Jurgen Kohler is hoping others with heavy trucks will also take some of the load.

“It’s doing the right thing. Doing the Canadian thing, if you will. We are a big country. We go overseas. We help out. We are known for peacekeeping. We are known for all kinds of things around the world and if we have an issue in our own country. Surely to goodness we can do the same thing,” he said.
