Dozens of Manitoba hockey players laced up for a Tuesday afternoon shinny game to help with Braden Pettinger's recovery.
The 20-year-old Portage Terrier was paralyzed in a MJHL game on Nov. 12.
Family and friends say he fell into the boards awkwardly while going after the puck.
Game organizer Tatiana Rafter, who only knows Braden from seeing him around the rink, says she was already planning the charity game for the Christmas Cheer Board when she heard about the accident.
She says when one piece of the Manitoba hockey community breaks, everyone gets together to help fix it.
Three quarters of the proceeds from donations and silent auction items are now going to Pettinger's medical bills, the last quarter is for the Christmas Cheer Board.
Players from all different leagues, some on the cusp of starting NHL careers, suited up to play at the Sturgeon Heights Community Centre.
Some played with Pettinger for years, and describe him as 'tough as nails.'
Others, like Brandon Wheat Kings Nolan Patrick, have never met Pettinger personally but wanted to be here to show his support.
Pettinger's cousin, Jennifer More says he knows about the game and wish he could be here, and is staying optimistic about getting back on his feet.
Pettinger is still in hospital and just started occupational therapy.
