The new Punjab Cultural Centre has been 10 years in the making and it is now nearing completion. Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz presented the centre with $54,000 from his civic initiatives fund at a special opening ceremony on Saturday.
The new cultural centre at 1770 King Edward St. will offer members of Winnipeg’s Punjabi community education and recreation services and act as a social hub. It will feature an elementary school, day care, a seniors’ area and a multi-purpose room for community events.
“Centres like this one meet the needs of the communities they serve and help to connect people of different cultures,” Katz said in a news release.
On Saturday, parents and children toured the school in anticipation of classes beginning in September. The rest of the facility will be open in October.
The center cost $9.2 million to build, with funding coming from all three levels of government as well as fundraising efforts by the community.
