The province has begun the process to review the taxi cab industry.
Thursday afternoon, it released a request for proposals for a candidate to review the industry in Winnipeg.
The comprehensive review would include public consultation and make recommendations how to improve customer service and safety. It would look at issues related to market entry, licensing and rates.
“The taxicab industry is changing, and we want to engage citizens in determining the best way forward to meet customer demand in an innovative way and to ensure public safety is protected,” said Municipal Government Minister Drew Caldwell.
The review will also inform policy, legislative and regulatory changes to the Taxicab Act, the minister said.
The province said it recognizes a growing need for an updated study to streamline existing regulations while addressing the needs and concerns of the public.
Thursday morning, Manitoba’s Liberal Party had announced if elected in 2016, it would create legislation to pave the way for ride sharing services like Uber.
It would work with taxi companies and drivers to make the transition fair and equitable and said the industry is evolving quickly. The party also said it would direct Manitoba Public Insurance to develop insurance products to help those who would like to offer rides in private vehicles.
“We want what’s best for Manitobans and they are telling us they want to be able to use their smart phones to access transportation,” said Manitoba Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari. “Government over-regulation of this industry has helped lead to competitive weakness.”
